The University of Scranton is a private, co-educational Jesuit university, located in Scranton, which is a city in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania state, USA, serving as the county seat of Lackawanna County, with a population of more than 71 000 inhabitants, at the time of the 2009 census estimate, making it the largest principal city in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the state's 7th most populous city.
The university was established in 1888 and was founded by Most Rev. William O'Hara, the first Bishop of Scranton, first starting as St. Thomas College, adopting its current name, after being granted university status, in 1938.
It offers its students 61 undergraduate and 25 graduate programs, including 45 minors, 28 concentrations, and 1 Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Scranton's athletic teams are known as the Royals and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are purple and white.
